Choosing by sleeping position#
Side sleepers#
You need the shoulder to sink while the hips stay level. The Nova Hybrid is built for exactly this, with gel memory foam and wool-silk fillings over head-to-toe zoned springs, and it has the only perfect 10 for comfort we have awarded. Lighter side sleepers who want a sprung mattress that stays cool should look at the soft Tencel 1000; those who want a pure foam hug, the Reverso Memory. Back sleepers#
Medium to medium-firm with lumbar support. The Velour Hybrid is the all-rounder; the LuxeErgo 3400 is the upgrade, with dual-layer 7-zone springs and matching 9.0 scores for support and comfort. A systematic review of 39 studies found medium-firm the best all-round target for comfort and spinal alignment,1 and a 2025 study linked medium firmness to shorter time to fall asleep and more stable sleep architecture than a soft surface.3
Front sleepers#
Firm, flat and no sink at the hips. The Majestic 9000 (9.1 support, £273 on sale) is the value pick; the Majestic 11000 (9.3) is the firmest mattress we list. The Imperial 2000 gives the same firmness with a traditional natural-filled sprung feel.
Combination sleepers and couples#

Choosing by body weight#
Weight shifts the firmness you need by roughly one step. Under about 10 stone, the medium models will feel firm and the soft models are the ones that will actually contour. Between 10 and 16 stone, medium is right for most positions. Over 16 stone, go medium-firm to firm and prioritise depth: the 31cm LuxeErgo 3400 and 33cm Natural Pillow Top 5000 are the two built for heavier bodies, and both score 9.0 for support. Reading Luxe's pricing#
Luxe list high RRPs and run near-permanent reductions on most models, so the sale price is the real price. Three things follow:
- Judge value on the sale price. A "£619" LuxeErgo 3400 is a £464 mattress. Our value scores use the sale price where one is consistently available.
- Do not wait for a better sale. The reductions are the pricing model, not an event. If the sale price is right for you, buy.
- Three models are not discounted: the Velour Hybrid (£399), Pocket Reflex 1000 (£399) and Imperial 2000 (£449). They are priced fairly at list, and are among the best value in the range as a result.
Trial, delivery and warranty in detail#
- 100-night trial. Long enough to judge properly: comfort settles within three to four weeks. It is half Emma's 200 nights, which matters only if you are buying a feel you have never slept on, such as latex or an extra-firm foam, and want a full season to be sure. - Free delivery, flat rather than rolled, which matters for the natural-filled and latex models that do not compress well.
- 10-year warranty against manufacturing defects and sagging beyond a stated depth. Long-term testing shows quality foam and pocket-spring builds hold their firmness well, with comfort layers softening before cores,2 so gradual softening is normal and not a claim. Rotate head-to-toe every few months, more often on the natural-filled models, whose fillings settle unevenly if left.
