Firm hybrid versus a choice of hybrids#
OTTY built its reputation on one very good idea and has stayed close to it. That is a strength if the idea suits you: a supportive, cool, medium-firm-to-firm hybrid is exactly what the evidence recommends for most back sleepers and back-pain sufferers,1 and a focused range is easier to buy from.
It is a weakness if you are not that sleeper. A light side sleeper on a firm hybrid will wake with a sore shoulder, and OTTY has little to offer them. Luxe do: the Nova Hybrid (medium-soft, perfect 10 comfort) and the soft sprung Tencel 1000 exist precisely for that person. Luxe also sell latex and traditional natural-filled pocket springs (Imperial 2000), neither of which OTTY make.
Cooling: gel foam versus phase-change foam versus natural fibre#
Both brands sleep cooler than an all-foam mattress simply because a spring core is mostly air. Above the springs they take different approaches:
- OTTY uses gel-infused foam, which conducts heat away from the surface a little faster than plain foam.
- Luxe's LuxeTherm uses phase-change foam, which absorbs heat as it changes state, then releases it as you cool. It has a finite capacity each night, but it is a more active mechanism than gel.
- Luxe's natural-filled models (wool, cotton, latex) rely on fibres that wick moisture and buffer temperature swings without any engineered layer.
