Who the Imperial 2000 suits
The Imperial 2000 is the traditional British mattress on this site: 2000 hand-nested pocket springs, natural fibre fillings, a hand-tufted cover, and none of the foam engineering that dominates everything else we list. If your idea of a good mattress was formed before bed-in-a-box existed, this is the one that will feel right.
It suits back sleepers, front sleepers and anyone who wants a firm, breathable, naturally filled bed. It does not suit side sleepers wanting cushioning, or anyone expecting the plush surface of a modern hybrid. Construction and materials
Twenty-nine centimetres – the second-deepest mattress we list. Two thousand pocket springs are hand-nested, meaning the spring pockets are sewn together by hand rather than glued, which allows each spring to move more independently. Above them sit natural fibre fillings, and the whole thing is hand-tufted: stitched through from top to bottom at intervals, with the tufts visible on the surface.
Tufting is the detail that matters most here. It compresses and anchors the fillings so they cannot migrate or bunch, which is the failure mode that ruins naturally filled mattresses. It is labour-intensive and largely absent below this price.
Comfort and support
We score it 8.7 for support and 7.8 for comfort. The support comes from the density of the spring unit; the comfort figure reflects natural fibres, which compress into a supportive pad rather than a cushioning one.
Back and front sleepers do well. The 2000-spring count provides finer contouring than the 1000 in the Pocket Reflex, so the mattress follows the body more precisely while staying firm. Side sleepers will find it firm at the shoulder, and lighter side sleepers will find it unforgiving.
Temperature
Excellent, and one of the strongest reasons to buy it. Natural fibres absorb and release moisture through the night in a way no synthetic foam manages, and a 29cm spring unit provides a large open cavity for air to move. This is among the coolest-sleeping mattresses on the site without a single piece of cooling technology in it.
Edge support and motion isolation
Edge support is very good – a deep, dense spring unit with a tufted perimeter holds its shape well. Motion isolation is moderate: hand-nested springs move more independently than glued ones, which helps, but firm natural fillings transmit more movement than a deep foam comfort layer would.
Durability, trial and warranty
Traditional construction is durable construction. Hand-nested springs and tufted natural fillings are what mattresses were built from when they were expected to last fifteen years, and this should comfortably exceed a decade of nightly use. The caveat is maintenance: natural fillings settle, so rotate head-to-toe monthly for the first year and quarterly thereafter, without fail. The 100-night trial and 10-year warranty apply.
Our verdict
A genuinely traditional mattress at a fair price, and the coolest-sleeping option under £500 we list. The 8.4 value score reflects real quality – hand-nesting and hand-tufting are expensive processes that most £449 mattresses skip. Buy it if you want a firm, breathable, natural bed built the old way.
