Who the Millbrook Serenity Luxury 4750 suits

The 4750 is a deep, plush luxury mattress for side sleepers and anyone who wants to sink a little further into natural fillings than the 4500 allows. Its 33cm build sits high on a bed frame and feels substantial.

The problem is price. At the time of writing, a 4750 double costs more than a Serenity Luxury 6500 double, which has 1,750 more micro springs and is a centimetre deeper, and much more than the Serenity 4500, which is only a step behind it in specification.

Construction

Every Serenity mattress shares the same chassis: Millbrook's ErgoZone 7 seven-zone spring layout, softer under the shoulders and hips and firmer under the lower back and legs; the Ultra Edge perimeter system with hand side-stitching; a Smooth-Tech tuft-free top, so there are no tufting buttons to feel; and a chemical-free Smooth-Flex four-way stretch cover. All are non-turn, so you rotate them head to foot rather than flipping. The models differ in spring count, the natural fillings on top and the depth.

The 4750 has 1,000 full-size pocket springs and 3,750 Comfonomic micro springs, under fine English cotton, Hampshire wool, silk and cashgora. It is 33cm deep.

Comfort and support

Compared with the 4500, the extra depth goes into a more generous fill, so the surface feels plusher and the sink at the shoulder is deeper. The zoned spring unit still holds alignment well, and firm tension is available for back sleepers who want the luxury fill with more push-back.

Temperature, edges and motion

Deep natural fillings can trap a little more warmth than a thin top, but wool and silk manage moisture well and the spring layers breathe, so it still sleeps cooler than foam. The edge is hand side-stitched and firm. Motion isolation is excellent.

Returns, guarantee and delivery

Millbrook mattresses are handmade to order in Southampton, where the company has made beds since 1946, and carry a 5-year guarantee. There is no sleep trial: Laudsleep accepts returns within 30 days of delivery, but its returns policy excludes sale items, so check whether the price you are paying is a sale price before you buy. A 5-year guarantee is also shorter than the 10 years most bed-in-a-box brands offer, although a well-made pocket-sprung mattress with natural fillings typically lasts longer than its guarantee.

Our verdict

A beautifully comfortable mattress at the wrong price. Unless the 4750 is discounted below the 6500 when you shop, buy the 6500 for the deepest Millbrook, or the 4500 for the best value.
