Quick answer: buy the Millbrook Serenity 4500. At £899 for a double it has 4,500 springs and a wool, cotton, silk and cashgora fill, scores 8.7/10 overall, and costs less than two models below it in the range. Choose the Serenity Luxury 6500 if you want the plushest Millbrook, or the Serenity 1020 if you are a back sleeper on a tighter budget.

About Millbrook Beds#

Millbrook Beds has made mattresses and divans in Southampton since 1946, and still makes them by hand, to order. Its Serenity range is a traditional British build: pocket springs and natural fillings, with no foam at all. We list it through Laud Sleep, which sells the full range online with free mainland UK delivery.

What every Serenity shares#

The six models are built on the same chassis, so the differences are in the springs on top, the fillings and the depth, not the basic engineering:

  • ErgoZone 7: a seven-zone spring layout, softer under the shoulders and hips and firmer under the lower back.
  • Ultra Edge: a reinforced perimeter with hand side-stitching, so the edge holds when you sit on it.
  • Tuft-free top: no tufting buttons to feel through the sheet.
  • Non-turn: rotate head to foot, but do not flip.
  • Medium or firm tension, at the same price on most sizes.

How the range changes as you go up#

The 1020 is the only model without micro springs, which makes it the firmest-feeling and the most buoyant: a good back sleeper's mattress, less good for lighter side sleepers. From the 2500 upwards, a second layer of Comfonomic micro springs sits above the main unit, and the more of them there are, the more closely the surface follows the shoulder and hip. The "Luxury" models add depth and a fuller fill, which you feel as a plusher, more substantial surface. The 6500, with 5,500 micro springs and 34cm of depth, is the most cushioned, while still feeling sprung rather than sinking like memory foam.

The pricing quirks#

Millbrook's model numbers do not run in price order, and two of them are worth knowing before you buy:

  • The 4500 costs less for a double than the Luxury 2750, despite having twice the micro springs and cashgora in the fill. Unless the 2750 is discounted below it, buy the 4500.
  • The Luxury 6500 costs less for a double than the Luxury 4750, even with the 4750 on sale, and has more springs and more depth. Buy the 6500.

The firm-tension 6500 double was also £150 cheaper than medium when we checked. Prices move, so compare on the day.

Which Millbrook suits you?#

  • Side sleepers: the 4500 on medium tension, or the 6500 if you want deeper cushioning.
  • Back sleepers: the 4500 on firm tension, or the 1020 on firm if budget matters most.
  • Heavier sleepers: firm tension, and a deeper model (4500 or 6500) so the fillings do not bottom out.
  • Hot sleepers: any of them. With springs and natural fibres throughout, these are among the coolest mattresses we have tested.
  • Couples: two layers of independent springs keep movement local, so any model from the 2500 up.

The downsides#

Two, and both are about buying terms rather than the mattresses. First, the guarantee is 5 years, half what most bed-in-a-box brands give. A well-made sprung mattress usually outlasts that, but it is still a shorter promise. Second, there is no sleep trial: Laud Sleep accepts returns within 30 days of delivery, and its policy excludes sale items. Be confident about the tension you choose, and if you can, lie on a Millbrook in a showroom first.

They are also heavy, as any deep sprung mattress is, so rotating one is a two-person job, and the deeper models need deep-pocket fitted sheets.

How Millbrook compares#

Against the premium bed-in-a-box hybrids, such as the Simba Hybrid Pro or Emma Original Elite, a Millbrook sleeps cooler and feels more buoyant, but you give up the 200-night trial and half the warranty. Against the other traditional British makers, Millbrook is the value choice: see Millbrook vs Hypnos vs Vi-Spring. Laud Sleep also sells the Luff Prestige Bamboo, a hybrid with memory foam and a 10-year warranty, if you would rather have foam on top.

Our verdict#

Millbrook makes honest, well-built, natural-fibre mattresses at fair prices for handmade, and the Serenity 4500 is one of the best pocket-sprung mattresses you can buy for under £900. The short guarantee and the lack of a trial are the reasons to hesitate, not the mattresses themselves.

Frequently asked questions#

Are Millbrook mattresses good?#

Yes. In our testing the Serenity range scored between 8.3 and 8.7 out of 10, with the 4500 and 6500 at the top. They are handmade in England with natural fillings and no foam.

Where are Millbrook mattresses made?#

In Southampton, where Millbrook Beds has made beds since 1946. Each mattress is made to order.

Do Millbrook mattresses need turning?#

The Serenity range is non-turn: rotate it head to foot every few months, but do not flip it.

What is the difference between Serenity and Serenity Luxury?#

The Luxury models (2750, 4750 and 6500) are deeper, at 31 to 34cm, with a fuller natural fill, so they feel plusher. Spring count, not the Luxury badge, is the better guide to how cushioned a model is.

Do Millbrook mattresses come with a sleep trial?#

Not through Laud Sleep. It accepts returns within 30 days of delivery, excluding sale items, and Millbrook gives a 5-year guarantee.
