Who the Emma Original suits
The Emma Original is our benchmark "first recommendation": the mattress we point people to when they have no strong preferences to design around. Its true-medium feel works for back sleepers, side sleepers and people who switch positions through the night, and its £469 double price (frequently discounted) keeps it inside most budgets. Construction and materials
The Original is a 25cm three-layer all-foam build. The top layer is Emma's open-pored Airgocell foam, which is quicker to respond and less heat-retentive than standard memory foam. Beneath it sits a conventional memory foam layer that does the contouring work at the shoulders and hips, and the base is firmer HRX support foam that stops you sinking through to the bed frame and gives the mattress its overall stability. The cover is a breathable knit that unzips for washing.
The layering matters: many budget foam mattresses are a single slab with a soft topper, which feels similar in a showroom but loses its shape years sooner. The Original's graduated firmness is what earns it a support score of 8.4 despite having no springs.
Comfort and support

Lying on your back, the memory foam fills the lumbar curve while the HRX base keeps the hips from dipping, spinal alignment stays neutral for anyone of light-to-average build. The medium feel is genuinely medium: firmer than plush pillow-top builds like the Luxe Nova Hybrid, noticeably softer than the Original Pro. Combination sleepers will find turning over easy for a foam mattress, though spring lovers will still miss the pushback.
Temperature
All-foam mattresses insulate more than sprung ones, and the Original is no exception. Edge support and motion isolation
Edge support is the Original's weakest area: sitting on the side compresses it noticeably, and you lose a few centimetres of confident sleeping surface at the perimeter. Motion isolation is the flip side, movement on one side of the bed simply disappears, making it a strong choice for couples with different schedules or a restless partner.
Durability, trial and warranty
Emma's 200-night trial is double the industry-standard 100 nights, and the 10-year warranty covers sagging beyond 2.5cm. Quality foams like these hold their firmness well in long-term materials testing; rotating the mattress head-to-toe monthly for the first year, then quarterly, evens out wear. Expect 7–8 years of nightly use at average body weight.

The Emma Original is the UK's default mattress for a reason. It has no glaring weakness, a class-leading trial, and a value score of 9.2, the equation that earns it our Best Overall badge. Buy it if you want the highest probability of a good outcome for under £500; look elsewhere only if you run hot, sleep on your front, or carry more weight than foam handles gracefully.
