Review methodology and editorial standards

How we research, test and score every mattress, the peer-reviewed evidence behind our advice, and the standards that keep our recommendations independent and trustworthy.

Sleepy Sheep exists to help UK shoppers make a confident, informed mattress decision. To do that credibly, our recommendations are built on three foundations: hands-on assessment, transparent scoring, and a base of published, peer-reviewed sleep science. This page explains exactly how we work so you can judge our advice on its merits.

Our evidence-based approach

Most mattress claims you read online are marketing. We separate evidence from advertising by grounding our buying advice in peer-reviewed research wherever it exists. Where the science is clear, for example that a medium-firm surface suits most people with back pain better than a very firm one, we say so and cite it. Where it is not, we say that too, and fall back on hands-on testing and clearly labelled editorial judgement.

Every research-backed guide on this site carries inline citations and a full reference list, so you can follow any claim back to its primary source. We review the literature periodically and update articles as new evidence emerges.

How we test mattresses

Scores and recommendations combine structured hands-on assessment with verifiable product data:

  • Spinal alignment across back, side and front sleeping positions, and across a range of body weights.
  • Pressure relief at the shoulders and hips, where most sleepers feel discomfort.
  • Temperature regulation, how breathable the construction and cover are, since trapped heat is a leading cause of night-time waking.
  • Motion isolation and edge support, which matter for couples and for getting in and out of bed.
  • Materials and build quality, foam density, spring count and type, comfort-layer depth and cover construction.
  • Verifiable specifics, trial length, warranty, delivery, certifications and live pricing, checked against the retailer.

How we score

Each mattress is scored out of 10 across three pillars, support, comfort and value, and the headline figure is their average. The full breakdown of what goes into each pillar is set out in our scoring methodology. Editorial badges such as “Best overall” and “Budget pick” are awarded to help you shortlist quickly and are never sold.
