About OTTY#
OTTY (One Thousand Tiny Years — a reference to the number of springs in their mattress) is a British direct-to-consumer mattress brand that launched in 2015. The brand positions itself as a premium hybrid alternative at mid-range pricing, targeting buyers who want the benefits of a multi-layer hybrid without paying Simba or Brook + Wilde prices. OTTY offers a 100-night trial and a 10-year guarantee.
OTTY Original Hybrid: construction#
The OTTY Original is a four-layer hybrid mattress approximately 25 cm deep:
- Cooling cover: A bamboo-blend knitted cover with a cooling-to-the-touch feel. A nice quality touch.
- Gel memory foam comfort layer (5 cm): A generous 5 cm gel-memory foam layer provides pressure relief and contouring. The gel infusion improves temperature performance over standard memory foam.
- 1,000 pocket springs (10 cm): The spring core provides structural support, edge support and airflow. 1,000 springs in a UK double is a reasonable spring count for a mid-range hybrid.
- Base foam (10 cm): A firm support base beneath the springs.
Firmness and feel#
OTTY rates the Original as medium-firm, and most sleepers at average weight agree with this assessment. The surface feel is memory foam — the gel-foam layer gives a noticeable contouring sensation — but with more underlying support and pushback than an all-foam mattress due to the pocket springs beneath. It is well-suited to back sleepers and heavier side sleepers who need more support than softer hybrids provide.
Performance for heavier sleepers#
OTTY's medium-firm designation and 5 cm gel-foam comfort layer make it particularly well-suited to heavier sleepers (over 14 stone / 90 kg). The gel foam layer is substantial enough to provide genuine pressure relief even when compressed by additional weight, and the pocket spring base maintains adequate support. OTTY is one of our recommended hybrids for heavier UK sleepers who don't want to pay premium prices.
Temperature performance#
Better than all-foam due to the pocket spring airflow layer. The gel-foam top layer also helps with temperature management. The bamboo-blend cover is notably breathable. Overall, a solid performer for temperature regulation at its price point.
Who OTTY suits#
- Best for: Back sleepers, medium-weight to heavier side sleepers wanting pressure relief with good support, value-conscious buyers wanting a genuine hybrid, those wanting a cooling hybrid under £700
- Less suitable for: Very light sleepers who may find medium-firm too firm, those who want the deepest memory foam contouring, combination sleepers who prefer a highly responsive feel
Our verdict#
OTTY delivers a genuinely good hybrid at a price that undercuts most competitors with similar specifications. The 5 cm gel-foam comfort layer is more generous than some more expensive brands, and the overall construction quality is high. It's particularly compelling for heavier sleepers or back sleepers who want support and temperature regulation without breaking the bank.
