There is no single "best" mattress#
Every "best mattress" list online is really a list of what suited the reviewer, or what paid the most commission. The honest answer is that the best mattress depends on your weight, sleeping position, temperature and budget. What the evidence can tell us is which starting point works for the most people, and how to narrow down from there.
What the research actually shows#
The strongest finding in mattress science is unglamorous: a medium-firm surface suits the majority of sleepers. A systematic review of 39 studies concluded that medium-firm mattresses promote comfort, sleep quality and spinal alignment better than soft or extra-firm options.1 A polysomnography study likewise found medium firmness produced shorter time-to-sleep and more stable sleep stages than a soft mattress.2 That makes medium-firm the smart default, the exception being very light sleepers and dedicated side sleepers, who often need a touch softer.
Note also that comfort is genuinely individual: validated tools now exist purely to measure mattress satisfaction, underlining that fit, not a star rating, is what predicts whether you will sleep well.3 This is why a long home trial matters more than any review.
Find the best mattress for your situation#
- Best all-rounder: a medium-firm hybrid, springs for airflow and support, foam for pressure relief.

What should you spend?#
In the UK, a reliable foam mattress starts around £150-£250, a good hybrid sits around £400-£900, and premium British-made or natural builds run £900 and up. Spending more buys better materials and durability, not automatically better sleep, the right fit at £400 beats the wrong one at £1,200.
Why the trial period matters most#
Because fit is individual, the single most important spec is the home trial. Most UK brands offer 100-365 nights. Buy from a brand that lets you sleep on it for at least a month and return it free if it is wrong, that converts an educated guess into a risk-free decision.
Frequently asked questions#
What is the best mattress firmness for most people?#
Medium-firm. It balances support and pressure relief and has the strongest evidence base for sleep quality and spinal alignment.1
Is a more expensive mattress always better?#
No. Above a quality threshold, extra money buys durability and premium materials, not guaranteed comfort. Match the mattress to your body first.
