Sometimes. Above about £650 the gains are in longevity, natural fillings and edge-to-edge consistency rather than in how it feels on night one. If you keep mattresses for ten years or more and sleep hot, a premium hybrid or latex mattress can be worth it. If you replace every five years, spend less.
What makes a mattress luxury?
Natural fillings (wool, cotton, silk, cashmere, latex), multiple layers of pocket springs, hand tufting and side stitching, and a double-sided build you can flip. Spring counts in the thousands are a marketing number, not a quality marker on their own.
