Price and lifespan aren't the same thing#

A higher price tag doesn't automatically buy more years of good sleep. What actually drives durability is the quality of the materials and construction, and those don't track perfectly with price. Some mid-priced mattresses use excellent components, while some premium ones charge for brand and marketing. The trick is knowing what to look for.

What the durability research shows#

Long-term testing of mattresses found that quality foams and pocket-spring systems retain much of their firmness through extended use, though all materials soften somewhat over time, with the comfort layer degrading before the support core.1 The takeaway: density and build quality, not price alone, determine how long a mattress holds its feel.

What actually makes a mattress last#

  • Foam density: higher-density foams resist sagging and body impressions far better than cheap, low-density foam, which softens quickly.
  • Spring quality and count: well-tempered pocket springs keep their support for years; thin, low-count springs fatigue sooner.
  • Comfort-layer thickness: a generous, quality comfort layer wears more slowly than a thin one that compresses fast.
  • Construction: good edge support and quality covers protect the whole structure.

Where extra money is, and isn't, worth it#

Spending more is often justified for denser foams, better springs and longer warranties, all of which extend lifespan. It's less worth it for purely cosmetic features, designer covers, or a famous name. A well-built mid-priced mattress can outlast a poorly specced premium one, so judge the components, not the badge.

Don't confuse RRP with value#

Many brands list a high reference price and discount heavily from it. A "£1,200 mattress reduced to £450" isn't a £1,200 mattress, it's a £450 one. Judge value on the price you actually pay and the quality of what's inside, not the headline saving.

Make any mattress last longer#

  • Rotate regularly (and flip if it's double-sided) to even out wear, see our rotation guide.
  • Use a supportive base, a sagging base ages any mattress prematurely.
  • Protect it from spills and allergens with a breathable protector.
  • Replace it when support fails, see our when to replace guide.
