Why a mattress protector is essential#

A mattress protector is perhaps the highest-value accessory you can add to any new mattress. Here's why:

  • Protects warranty: Most mattress warranties (including Emma, Simba and Nectar) exclude damage from staining. An unstained mattress in a clean condition is a requirement for a successful warranty claim. A protector keeps the mattress in warranty-valid condition.
  • Extends life: By blocking sweat, skin cells and moisture from reaching the mattress, a protector dramatically slows the accumulation of allergens and the degradation of comfort materials.
  • Reduces allergens: A good protector creates a barrier between sleepers and dust mites in the mattress. For allergy and asthma sufferers, this is clinically meaningful.
  • Easy care: The protector (£30–£80) is washed every month; the mattress (£400–£1,000) stays clean indefinitely.

Types of mattress protector#

Fitted sheet style (most common): Wraps around the mattress like a fitted sheet, with an elasticated skirt. Easy to fit and remove for washing. Available in waterproof and non-waterproof versions.

Fully encasing protectors: Zip around the entire mattress (including the underside). Maximum protection against dust mites and allergens — recommended for allergy and asthma sufferers. Harder to fit and remove.

Pillowtop protectors: Fitted protectors with a thin padding layer — functions as a protector and a very mild topper in one. Popular in the US, less common in the UK.

What to look for#

  • Breathability: Avoid PVC or low-quality polyurethane backings that create a hot, crinkly surface. Look for polyurethane membrane (rather than PVC) or natural waterproofing where needed.
  • Machine washable at 60°C: Essential to actually kill dust mites in the protector. Some protectors can only be washed at 40°C, which doesn't reliably kill mites.
  • Good fit: Ensure the protector fits your mattress depth. Most UK mattresses are 22–30 cm deep; some protectors are designed for shallower mattresses and don't stay in place on deep hybrids.
