How long do mattresses last?#
The general guidance is 7–10 years for most UK mattresses, with significant variation by type and quality:
- Budget all-foam mattresses: 5–7 years
- Mid-range hybrids and foam: 7–10 years
- Premium pocket-sprung with natural fillings: 10–15 years
- Double-sided traditional mattresses (Hypnos, Vi-Spring): 15–25 years
These are averages — the actual lifespan depends on weight, maintenance (rotation), and initial quality. A well-maintained, regularly rotated mid-range hybrid may last 12 years; a neglected budget foam mattress may need replacing in 4.
Eight signs it's time to replace your mattress#
- Visible sagging or body impressions: If you can see a permanent depression where you sleep — even when standing off the mattress — the support materials have failed. Support cannot be restored; the mattress needs replacing.
- You wake with pain or stiffness: If you regularly wake with back, shoulder or hip pain that improves after an hour of being up, poor sleep posture from a failed mattress is a likely contributor.
- You sleep better elsewhere: If you consistently sleep better in hotels, at relatives' homes or on your sofa, your mattress is the likely culprit.
- The springs are audible: Squeaking or creaking springs indicate the spring system is fatigued. Individual springs may have lost tension or broken.
- You've had it for over 10 years: Even a mattress that feels acceptable at 10+ years has likely lost significant support material performance that you've adapted to without realising. Research shows mattress replacement consistently improves sleep quality in over-10-year mattress owners.
- Worsening allergy or asthma symptoms: An old mattress accumulates allergens over years. If allergy symptoms during sleep have worsened, allergen load in the mattress may be a contributing factor.
- Your life circumstances have changed significantly: A mattress bought as a single adult may not be appropriate after a significant weight change, a new partner with different sleep needs, or a health condition affecting pressure sensitivity.
- Visible staining or odour that won't resolve: Deep staining or persistent odour despite cleaning may indicate mould within the mattress, which is a health concern and cannot be remediated.
The cost of keeping an old mattress#
Poor sleep is associated with reduced cognitive function, increased accident risk, weakened immune response and increased cardiovascular risk. The NHS spends billions annually treating conditions linked to poor sleep. Replacing a mattress that's affecting your sleep quality is a health investment, not just a comfort purchase.
