What mattress do hotels use in the UK?#
The two largest UK chains each use one standard bed, and both are made in Britain: Premier Inn uses the Silentnight-made Premier Inn Mattress 2.0, and Travelodge uses the Sleepeezee-made Travelodge Dreamer. Both can be bought for your own bedroom, direct from the chain.
Beyond those two it is less tidy. International groups such as Hilton, Marriott and InterContinental buy through panels of approved suppliers, so the bed varies by property, by brand tier and by refurbishment cycle. Hypnos is the name that comes up most in the UK at that end of the market.

What mattress does Premier Inn use?#
The Premier Inn Mattress 2.0, made exclusively by Silentnight: 1,000 Mirapocket springs, a gel-infused Geltex comfort layer, 28.5cm deep and medium-firm. It replaced the previous Hypnos beds from October 2022, which is why a lot of older articles still name the wrong brand.

What mattress does Travelodge use?#
The Travelodge Dreamer, built by Sleepeezee, a British maker that has been going since the early 1900s and handcrafts these at its factory in Rochester, Kent. Sleepeezee has supplied Travelodge for over 30 years.
The specification is old-fashioned in a way we rather like: 950 pocket springs, around 26cm deep, wool hand tufts and, crucially, a double-sided build you can flip. Almost no bed-in-a-box mattress is double-sided, because it is cheaper to build one good side. A flippable mattress wears more evenly and lasts longer, which is exactly what a hotel needs from a bed that gets slept on 300 nights a year.

What about Hilton, Marriott and Holiday Inn?#
These are international groups rather than single-bed chains, and they run approved-supplier panels: a property is told which mattresses it may buy, and picks within that. Hypnos Contract Beds, a British maker in Buckinghamshire, names Hilton, Marriott, InterContinental, Sofitel, Wyndham, Soho House, Jumeirah and Pan Pacific among its hotel partners, alongside individual London properties such as The Lanesborough, Brown's and The Landmark.
What that does not mean is that every Hilton in Britain has a Hypnos in it. Tiers differ, refurbishment cycles differ, and franchisees make their own choices within the approved list. Why do hotel beds feel better than yours?#
Three reasons, and only one of them is the mattress.
The mattress is specified for the average guest. A chain cannot tailor a bed to you, so it buys medium-firm, which is the firmness that suits the widest range of sleepers and the one the clinical literature most often supports for spinal alignment.1 If you have always bought soft mattresses and found hotel beds better, that is the finding in action.
The layers on top do a lot of the work. Hotels use a mattress protector, often a topper, and heavy, high-thread-count linen that is laundered and pressed. A good mattress topper and crisp bedding will get you closer to the hotel feel than most mattress upgrades, for a fraction of the money.
The bed is usually newer than yours. Contract mattresses are replaced on a cycle, often every five to seven years. The average British mattress is slept on for considerably longer than it should be, so you may be comparing a two-year-old bed with a twelve-year-old one. Are hotel mattresses firm or soft?#
Almost always medium-firm. A chain is buying one bed for every guest it will ever have, and medium-firm is the compromise that suits the widest range of body types and sleeping positions.
What is a hotel quality mattress?#
In practice it means a contract-grade build: a deep pocket-spring unit, a medium-firm feel, durable fillings and often a double-sided design that can be flipped. It is a durability specification more than a luxury one, because the bed has to survive several hundred guests a year.
Is it worth buying the hotel mattress you slept on?#
Only if you liked it for reasons that will hold at home. Two nights on a bed with hotel linen, blackout curtains and no children in the house is not a controlled test. Buying a mattress with a long home trial gives you a fairer one, and neither the Premier Inn nor the Travelodge mattress comes with a sleep trial.
