What is a small double?#

The UK small double (also called a three-quarter or queen in some older contexts) measures 120 × 190 cm — 30 cm wider than a single and 15 cm narrower than a standard double. It's a versatile size that's particularly popular for:

  • Guest rooms where a double would dominate the space
  • Younger adults who want more space than a single without a full double
  • Couples in smaller rooms where a standard double leaves insufficient bedroom furniture space
  • Studio flats and smaller second bedrooms

The small double vs standard double trade-off#

At 120 cm, a small double gives each of two partners 60 cm of sleeping width — 7.5 cm less per person than a standard double. For occasional use (guest room) this is perfectly acceptable. For two adults sleeping regularly, the standard double or king is the better investment. Solo adults will find a small double spacious and comfortable.

Availability note#

Not all mattress brands offer small double as a standard size. Emma, Silentnight and Simba include it in their range; some brands (including some premium options) jump from single directly to double. Verify availability before choosing your brand.

Best small double picks#

Best value small double: Emma Original. Emma includes small double in their standard range at proportionally lower pricing than their double. The same 200-night trial and 10-year guarantee apply.

Best pocket-sprung small double: Silentnight range. Silentnight's small double options are widely available through UK retailers at good prices — particularly useful if you prefer buying from a physical store.

Best for guest rooms: budget foam mattress. For a guest room used 20–40 nights per year, an entry-level foam mattress (under £200) is appropriate. Spending £400+ on a mattress used infrequently has diminishing returns.
