About Hypnos#
Hypnos Limited is a British mattress manufacturer based in Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire, founded in 1901. The brand holds a Royal Warrant of Appointment as supplier of beds and mattresses to HM The King, a rare distinction in the mattress industry. Hypnos is the supplier of choice for hundreds of luxury hotels globally, including Claridge's, The Savoy and numerous five-star international properties. They manufacture all their products in their Buckinghamshire factory using sustainably sourced materials.
Hypnos mattresses are sold through selected independent retailers and department stores. They are not available from online direct-to-consumer channels. Their range starts at around £900 for a double and extends to over £4,000 for the most premium models.
Hypnos construction philosophy#
Hypnos takes a traditional approach to mattress construction that differs fundamentally from foam-first online brands:
- Double-sided design: Unlike nearly all modern mattresses, most Hypnos mattresses are double-sided, meaning they can and should be flipped as well as rotated. This dramatically extends longevity.
- Natural fillings: Hypnos uses natural materials throughout, British wool, cotton, cashmere, silk and mohair in their various ranges. These provide superior temperature regulation and a sumptuous feel that synthetic fillings cannot replicate.
- Hand-built construction: Each mattress is hand-tufted and hand-stitched in the UK. This is labour-intensive but creates a more durable, tighter construction than machine-made alternatives.
- Pocket spring systems: High spring counts (2,000–4,000+ in king size) with quality tempered steel springs.
The Hypnos range#

Our verdict#
Hypnos represents a different philosophy from the online mattress market. If you're looking for a mass-market hybrid at competitive pricing, look elsewhere. If you want a hand-crafted British mattress using natural materials that will outlast anything from an online brand, Hypnos is one of the finest options available. The price is high, but the longevity makes the cost per night competitive with budget alternatives.
From the shop floor#
Hypnos was the brand we sold to people who had already had a bad experience with a cheap bed and wanted to buy once. That is exactly the right customer for it. Hand-built pocket springs and natural fillings do last, and a properly looked-after Hypnos at year twelve is usually in better shape than a foam mattress at year six. But the price of that longevity is a mattress that needs looking after: natural fillings settle, and you have to turn and rotate it on schedule or the body impressions arrive early and the retailer will, correctly, tell you it is not a fault.
Two cautions. Hypnos sells through retailers, and each retailer names its own versions with its own specifications, so comparing prices across shops is genuinely difficult; ask for the spring count, filling weights and depth rather than the model name. And most retailers do not offer a home trial on Hypnos, so the showroom lie-down has to do more work than it does with an online brand.

Millbrook Beds, making mattresses in Southampton since 1946, builds on the same principles as Hypnos: hand side-stitched pocket springs and natural fillings (wool, cotton, silk and cashgora), with no foam. Are Hypnos mattresses worth the money?#
For buyers who want a natural-filled, hand-built pocket-spring mattress that lasts well past ten years, yes, provided you rotate and turn it on schedule. If you want a home trial or a lower price, latex and natural-fibre hybrids from direct brands offer a similar feel for less.
How long does a Hypnos mattress last?#
Typically 10–15 years with proper care. Natural fillings settle rather than break down, so the mattress needs regular turning and rotating to keep wear even; neglect that and body impressions appear early.
Do Hypnos mattresses come with a trial?#
Usually not. Hypnos sells through retailers, and most do not offer a sleep trial on it. Your statutory rights still apply, but there is no 100-night return as standard, so the showroom test matters more.
Why are Hypnos mattresses named differently in each shop?#
