About Vi-Spring#
Vi-Spring Limited is a Plymouth-based British mattress manufacturer founded in 1901 by the inventor of the pocket spring, James Marshall. The company claims to have made the first pocket-sprung mattress in the world. Today, Vi-Spring produces entirely hand-crafted mattresses using the finest natural materials, supplied to royal households, luxury hotels and discerning private buyers across the world. Their mattresses are double-sided, made to order and backed by a 30-year guarantee.
Vi-Spring mattresses start at approximately £1,500 for a double and extend to over £20,000 for bespoke, fully hand-stuffed models using the rarest materials.
What makes Vi-Spring different#
Three things distinguish Vi-Spring from all other mattress manufacturers:
- Calico pocket springs: Vi-Spring uses an exceptionally high spring count (upwards of 2,000 individually hand-nested springs in a double) with long-coil tempered steel. Each spring is individually nested by hand, the springs are not mass-produced in sheets.
- Natural fillings: No synthetic materials anywhere in a Vi-Spring mattress. Fillings include British fleece wool, Shetland fleece, cashmere, mohair, silk, Horsetail hair and cotton. These materials are selected for longevity and natural temperature regulation properties that synthetic alternatives cannot match.
- Double-sided, double-stitched: Every Vi-Spring mattress can be flipped and rotated, and should be, quarterly. The hand-stitched side walls create a firm, durable perimeter that modern one-sided mattresses cannot replicate.

- Herald Superb: Entry-level Vi-Spring (still exceptional). British fleece wool, 1,716 springs in a double. From approximately £1,500 for a double.
- Tiara Superb: Their most popular model. Adds Shetland fleece and a higher spring count.
- Diamond Majesty: Vi-Spring's signature premium model. Cashmere, mohair, silk and Horsetail hair. One of the finest mattresses money can buy.
- Bespoke: Fully custom mattresses in any size, firmness and filling specification.
Firmness and feel#
Vi-Spring offers multiple firmness options across their range, from plush soft to very firm. The feel is traditional British luxury, supportive yet cushioning, with natural fillings that contour gently without the sink-in sensation of memory foam. It is a feel that is increasingly rare in the modern market and deeply appreciated by those who seek it.
Longevity#
A Vi-Spring mattress, properly maintained, will last 25–40 years. When viewed as a cost-per-night proposition, even the higher-priced models become competitive with mid-range mattresses that need replacing every 8–10 years. This is perhaps the most compelling argument for the price.

How we assessed Vi-Spring: this section draws on the reviewer's twenty years selling mattresses on UK high street shop floors, including fitting customers to Vi-Spring beds and hearing what they came back to say. It is not a structured sleep test of the current models. Construction details come from the brand's published specifications, and the comparison scores below are for the mattresses we have scored ourselves, not for Vi-Spring.
Vi-Spring is the mattress the trade itself aspires to, and having sold it, we can say the reputation is earned: hand-nested pocket springs, real wool and horsehair, and a build that is still comfortable when everything else in the house has been replaced twice. It is also the mattress with the most demanding ownership. It needs turning and rotating on schedule for its whole life, it arrives feeling firmer than it will settle to, and it has no home trial, so the showroom decision is final in a way it is not with any online brand.
The price question is real. A Vi-Spring double costs what several very good mattresses cost, and it does not last several times as long. What it offers is a particular natural, sprung, hand-made feel that nothing cheaper reproduces exactly. If that is what you want and the price is within reach, buy it and look after it. If you are buying it because it is the best, ask yourself whether the best-for-you is a different, cheaper thing.

None of these is a Vi-Spring, and we would not pretend otherwise. But Luxe-Latex Natural Pillow Top 5000 at £674 on sale delivers a deep, natural, hand-built sprung feel with a trial and a 10-year warranty, and for most buyers that is the more sensible way to spend the money. The handmade alternative we have tested: Millbrook#
Millbrook Beds, making mattresses in Southampton since 1946, builds on the same principles as Vi-Spring: hand side-stitched pocket springs and natural fillings (wool, cotton, silk and cashgora), with no foam. The differences are that Millbrook's Serenity mattresses are one-sided, so you rotate rather than flip them, they are sold online through Laud Sleep, and they start at £649 for a double. Frequently asked questions#
Why are Vi-Spring mattresses so expensive?#
Hand-nested calico pocket springs, natural fillings such as wool, cotton, silk, cashmere and horsehair, hand side-stitching and Devon manufacture. Each bed takes many hours of skilled labour, and the materials cost far more than foam.
How long does a Vi-Spring mattress last?#
Fifteen to twenty-five years with proper care is realistic, which is why the cost per night is not as extreme as the price suggests. Care means turning and rotating on schedule for its whole life.
Does Vi-Spring offer a sleep trial?#
No. Vi-Spring sells through retailers and does not offer a home trial as standard. Your statutory rights apply, but there is no 100-night return, so the showroom decision is final.
Is Vi-Spring better than Hypnos?#
Both are premium British natural-filled pocket-spring makers. Vi-Spring sits higher on price and uses hand-nested springs and more exotic fillings; Hypnos is more widely stocked and somewhat more affordable. Neither offers a trial; both reward careful maintenance.
