Defining a hybrid mattress#

A hybrid mattress has at least two distinct layers: a support core made of pocket springs and one or more comfort layers made from foam, latex, gel foam or natural fibres. The spring base provides the structural support and airflow; the comfort layers provide pressure relief, contouring and surface feel.

The term "hybrid" is sometimes used loosely by manufacturers — some products with a thin foam layer over springs are marketed as hybrids but are really just sprung mattresses with a thin comfort layer. A true hybrid has at least 5 cm of quality comfort material above the springs.

The hybrid segment has grown dramatically in the UK because hybrids address the main weaknesses of both all-foam and all-spring mattresses:

  • All-foam mattresses can sleep warm and feel claustrophobic for some sleepers. The pocket-spring base in a hybrid dramatically improves airflow.
  • All-spring mattresses can feel bouncy and create pressure points. The foam or latex comfort layer in a hybrid softens the surface and reduces pressure.
  • Hybrids suit the widest range of sleepers — they work well for side, back and combination sleepers.

The typical hybrid construction#

Most quality hybrid mattresses are built in 3–5 layers from bottom to top:

  • Base foam or edge support: A perimeter of firmer foam prevents the mattress from sagging at the edges.
  • Pocket spring core: Typically 1,000–2,000 individual springs (in a double). Higher-end hybrids use micro-springs or mini-springs for a more refined feel.
  • Transition layer: A layer of firmer foam or latex that bridges the springs and comfort layers, preventing you from feeling the springs through the comfort material.
  • Comfort layer(s): Memory foam, gel foam or latex. This is what you feel most directly when sleeping.
  • Cover: A knitted or quilted fabric, often incorporating cooling fibres, wool or bamboo.

Key hybrid mattress brands in the UK#

  • Emma Hybrid: Good all-rounder, competitive pricing, 200-night trial
  • Simba Hybrid: Popular titanium micro-spring system layered above pocket springs
  • OTTY Hybrid: Strong value for money, particularly for heavier sleepers
  • Brook + Wilde Elite: Premium UK brand with higher-quality materials
  • Casper Original Hybrid: US brand with a strong UK presence

Are hybrids worth the extra cost?#

Hybrids typically cost more than all-foam mattresses at the same price tier. For most UK buyers, the extra investment is worth it because hybrids:

  • Sleep cooler (better airflow through the spring system)
  • Last longer (springs are more durable than all-foam bases)
  • Suit a wider range of body types and sleep positions
