Do you need a mattress topper?#

A mattress topper adds a comfort layer above your existing mattress. Common reasons to use one:

  • Your mattress is too firm: A soft topper adds the comfort layer without replacing the whole mattress.
  • Your mattress is ageing: A topper can mask mild firmness changes in an older mattress, extending its useful life by 1–3 years.
  • You want temperature control: Wool or cooling gel toppers can modify the thermal properties of your mattress.
  • Guest room upgrade: A quality topper on a guest room mattress is more cost-effective than replacing the whole mattress.

A topper cannot fix a deeply sagging mattress or one with broken springs — that requires replacement. But for a mattress that's structurally sound but simply too firm or beginning to feel tired, a topper is an effective solution.

Topper types explained#

Memory foam toppers#

The most popular type in the UK. Memory foam toppers add pressure-relieving contouring above your existing mattress. Look for at least 4 cm depth and density of 40 kg/m³ or above for longevity. Thinner or lower-density foam toppers compress quickly. Best for: side sleepers wanting more pressure relief; those who find their mattress too firm.

Latex toppers#

Natural or blended latex toppers are more responsive and breathable than memory foam. They add cushioning without the slow-sinking feel of memory foam, and sleep cooler. More expensive than foam, but longer-lasting. Best for: hot sleepers; combination sleepers; those who want cushioning without memory foam's slow response.

Wool toppers#

A layer of wool (or wool and cotton) adds temperature regulation and a traditional, breathable surface feel. Wool is a natural temperature buffer — it wicks moisture and regulates heat in both directions. Less cushioning than foam or latex, but outstanding for temperature management. Best for: hot sleepers; those who want natural materials; adding warmth in winter without overheating in summer.

Microfibre/pillowtop toppers#

Filled with synthetic microfibre or down-alternative material, these add a plush surface feel similar to a hotel pillowtop. They compress relatively quickly (2–3 years) but are the most affordable option and easy to launder. Best for: guest rooms; adding temporary softness; budget toppers.
