Why the base matters#

The mattress base is not passive. It affects the support the mattress receives from below (affecting how it performs and how long it lasts), the airflow under the mattress (affecting temperature and moisture management), and whether the mattress warranty remains valid. Using an inappropriate base can void some manufacturers' guarantees.

Divan bases#

A divan is a solid or platform-top base, typically upholstered in fabric and available in a range of colours. Most UK divans come in two halves (for easier transport up stairs) joined with linking bars.

Solid-top divan: Provides a completely flat, uniform support surface. Maximises support for the mattress. The recommended base for memory foam and all-foam mattresses — slats create uneven support for foam that can cause it to sag between slats over time.

Spring-top divan: Has a sprung platform that provides some additional cushioning beneath the mattress. Can add a softer feel. May not be suitable with all pocket-sprung mattresses (check manufacturer guidance — adding springs to springs can destabilise the support).

Storage divans: Many UK divans include drawers or an ottoman-style lift-up storage space. This is the primary practical advantage of divan over bed frame — the base doubles as storage. Particularly valuable in smaller UK bedrooms.

Bed frames with slatted bases#

Slatted bed frames support the mattress on a series of wooden or metal slats rather than a solid surface. This creates airflow beneath the mattress, which can improve temperature regulation and prevent moisture accumulation.

Fixed slat frames: Slats are fixed at uniform intervals. Key specification: slat gap should be no more than 5 cm for foam mattresses. Wider gaps allow foam to sag between slats. For pocket-sprung mattresses, up to 7–8 cm gaps are usually acceptable.

Sprung slat frames: Flexible slats (typically laminated wood with some give) provide cushioning beneath the mattress. Can enhance comfort and is compatible with most mattress types.

Whatever base you choose, verify it meets your mattress manufacturer's specifications — some brands specify a minimum slat gap or require a solid base to maintain warranty validity.
