What a mattress topper can and can't do#

A mattress topper is a removable layer (typically 2–8 cm thick) that sits on top of your mattress. It can change the surface feel, add cushioning and extend the life of a mattress that is otherwise in good condition. However, a topper cannot fix structural problems. If your mattress is sagging, has worn-out springs or has lost its core support, adding a topper is like painting over damp — it masks the problem temporarily without solving it.

When a mattress topper is the right choice#

  • Your mattress is in good structural condition but the surface feel isn't quite right for you (e.g., too firm after buying a medium-firm mattress)
  • You're staying in rented accommodation with a mattress you can't change
  • You want to add a cooling layer to a mattress that sleeps warm
  • You want to protect a new mattress while keeping a softer surface feel
  • You want to buy time before replacing a mattress that is starting to show age but is still functional

When you need a new mattress#

  • Visible sagging or body impressions deeper than 3 cm
  • Springs you can feel through the mattress or that make noise
  • Waking up with pain that improves during the day — this suggests poor support
  • The mattress is more than 8–10 years old and noticeably less comfortable than when new
  • Significant hygiene concerns (moisture damage, persistent odours, mould)

The cost comparison#

A quality mattress topper costs £50–£300. A new quality mattress costs £400–£1,000+. If your mattress has structural issues, spending £150 on a topper is money wasted — it will not solve the problem and you'll still need a new mattress within a year or two. If the mattress is structurally sound, a good topper can add several more years of comfortable use for a fraction of the cost of replacing.

The best mattress toppers available in the UK#

If you decide a topper is the right choice, look for:

  • Memory foam toppers (4–8 cm): Best for pressure relief and softening a firm mattress
  • Natural latex toppers: More breathable and responsive than memory foam, but more expensive
  • Wool or feather toppers: Good temperature regulation, luxurious feel, require a mattress protector underneath
  • Gel foam toppers: Cooler than standard memory foam
