The longest mattress trial in the UK is Nectar's, at 365 nights. Simba, Emma, Eve and Dormeo give 200 nights, OTTY and Luxe Mattresses 100, and several of the best traditional makers give none at all. We checked every brand's terms on 3 November 2026. Here is the full table, what the small print takes away, and whether a longer trial should decide which mattress you buy.

Which mattress has the longest trial?#

Nectar, at 365 nights. You can sleep on a Nectar for a full year and still return it for a refund. That is a genuine advantage if you are an indecisive buyer or you are changing mattress type, say from springs to memory foam, and want to be sure. Read our Nectar review before you let the trial decide, though: the mattress itself is a plain memory foam build, and a long trial does not make a mattress better, it only makes the decision reversible.

Behind Nectar, four brands give 200 nights: Simba, Emma, Eve and Dormeo. Six to seven months is more than enough time to know, so in practice there is no difference between 200 and 365 nights for most people.

Is a 100-night trial standard?#

It was the standard when bed-in-a-box brands arrived in the UK, and it is still what OTTY, Luxe Mattresses and most smaller online brands offer. 100 nights is enough: brands ask you to keep the mattress for at least 30 nights before returning it because foam and springs settle and your body adjusts, and nearly everyone who returns a mattress does so within the first two months. The brands that moved to 200 or 365 nights did it for marketing as much as for you. What matters more than the number is what the trial excludes.

What the small print takes away#

  • A minimum period. Most trials require you to keep the mattress for 14 to 30 nights before you can return it.
  • Condition. The mattress must be undamaged and unstained. Use a protector from the first night.
  • One trial per household. Brands generally allow one trial return per customer or address, so you cannot work through the range.
  • Exchange, not refund. Silentnight's 60-night comfort guarantee swaps the mattress for another Silentnight; it does not give your money back.
  • Collection. Most brands collect free in mainland Britain and charge for Northern Ireland, the Highlands and islands. Some ask you to arrange it.
  • Sale items. Retailer returns policies, as opposed to brand trials, often exclude sale purchases. Luff and Millbrook mattresses bought in a sale fall into this.

Our guide to how mattress trials work covers the mechanics, and your statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 apply on top of any trial if the mattress is faulty.

Should the trial decide which mattress you buy?#

No. Buy the mattress that suits how you sleep, then treat the trial as insurance. The brands with no trial, Millbrook, Luff and The Foam People, make some of the best-value mattresses we have tested; what you give up is the right to change your mind, so for those you should be sure of the firmness and type before ordering. A trial matters most when you are switching to a type you have never slept on, such as memory foam or latex, or buying for someone else.

Frequently asked questions#

Which mattress company has the longest trial period?#

Nectar, with a 365-night home trial. Simba, Emma, Eve and Dormeo offer 200 nights.

Is a 200-night trial better than 100?#

Only marginally. Most people know within six weeks whether a mattress suits them, and brands make you keep it for at least 30 nights anyway. A 100-night trial with free collection is better than a 200-night trial that charges you to return it.

Can you really return a mattress after sleeping on it?#

Yes, that is the point of a trial. The mattress must be clean and undamaged. Returned mattresses are usually donated to charity or recycled rather than resold.

Do you get a full refund on a mattress trial?#

From the online brands in the table, yes, provided you meet the conditions. Silentnight's scheme is an exchange, and retailers' own returns policies may deduct a collection fee.

Which mattresses have no trial?#

Mattresses made to order, including Millbrook, Luff and The Foam People, and traditional luxury makers such as Hypnos and Vi-Spring. For these, try the mattress in a showroom or be confident in the firmness before you buy.
