About Eve Sleep#

Eve Sleep is a British mattress brand founded in London in 2015, making it one of the UK's original direct-to-consumer mattress companies. Eve went public on the London Stock Exchange in 2017 and has since consolidated its position as a trusted mid-range brand. Eve offers a 100-night trial and a 10-year guarantee, and sells through its own website and selected retail partners including John Lewis and Next.

Eve Original Mattress: construction#

The Eve Original is a four-layer foam mattress:

  • EveRelax foam (top, 4 cm): Eve's proprietary open-cell foam. More breathable and responsive than standard memory foam, with a medium-fast response that makes position changes comfortable.
  • Memory foam layer (2 cm): A thin contouring layer beneath the top foam for pressure relief.
  • Support transition foam (4 cm): Medium-density foam that transitions between the comfort layers and base.
  • Base support foam (15 cm): High-density support core providing structural integrity and durability.

Eve Hybrid Mattress: construction#

The Eve Hybrid adds a pocket-spring layer above the base foam, beneath the comfort layers. The overall construction is similar to other mid-range UK hybrids, with the EveRelax foam providing the characteristic Eve feel on the surface. The Hybrid is available in soft, medium and firm options, one of the wider firmness ranges available from an online UK brand.

Firmness and feel#

The Eve Original is rated as medium. It has a slightly more responsive feel than the Emma Original or Nectar, the EveRelax foam is designed to feel like a "responsive medium" rather than the slow-sinking memory foam feel. This makes it more suitable for combination sleepers than pure memory foam alternatives.

The Hybrid range's multiple firmness options is a significant advantage: being able to select soft, medium or firm means you're not forced to compromise.

Temperature performance#

The Original performs adequately for most sleepers, though it's still an all-foam mattress and will sleep warmer than a hybrid. The Hybrid provides significantly better temperature regulation. The open-cell EveRelax foam is noticeably more breathable than standard memory foam.

Eve Sleep produces a quality product with a thoughtfully designed foam system that differentiates it from generic memory foam alternatives. The Hybrid range's multiple firmness options are a genuine advantage over brands that offer only medium. A solid choice for UK buyers who want a well-made, British-brand mattress at a competitive price point.

From the shop floor#

Eve is a lesson in why the company behind a mattress matters as much as the foam inside it. The brand went into administration in 2022 and was bought by Bensons for Beds, which now sells it. The mattresses are still recognisably Eve, but the trial, warranty and customer service are Bensons' terms, so read them as Bensons' terms rather than relying on what Eve used to promise. For buyers, that is not necessarily worse, since Bensons has stores you can walk into, but it is different.

On the beds themselves, Eve's yellow-topped medium foam always sold well to first-time online buyers, and the returns we saw were the ordinary ones for the type: too warm for hot sleepers, too soft for heavier people. The hybrids fixed the first problem and partly the second. If you are buying Eve today, the hybrid is the version we would steer you toward.
