Who the Saffron Comfort Deep suits
The Saffron is the first mattress in The Foam People range we would recommend without qualification as a primary bed. The reason is depth: at 23cm there is enough material above the base layer that an average adult does not compress through it, which is exactly where the 15cm Core models run out of road.
It is the versatile choice in the range. Side sleepers get enough give at the shoulder, back sleepers get a level pelvis, and combination sleepers are not fighting the mattress when they turn. If you want firmer, take the Comfort Ortho Firm; if you want cooler, take the Comfort CoolMax Intelligent; if you want plusher, the Superior Cashmere is £24 more.
Construction and materials
Twenty-three centimetres of memory foam over supportive foam, finished with a deep quilted cover. The quilting is doing more work than it appears to: a deep-quilted top adds a layer of soft, compressible loft above the foam, which is what gives this mattress a gentler first impression than the raw foam specification suggests.
The extra 8cm over the Core models is the meaningful upgrade. More foam means a longer compression path before you reach the base, which translates directly into better support for heavier bodies and a longer usable life.
Comfort and support
We score it 8.5 for comfort and 8.3 for support, the most balanced pair of numbers in the Foam People range. There is no standout figure here and that is the point – it does everything competently rather than one thing brilliantly.
The medium feel is true. On your side, the memory foam and quilted loft let the shoulder settle enough to keep the spine level for sleepers up to around 15 stone. On your back, the supportive foam layer holds the hips up. Front sleepers will want something firmer.
Temperature
This is the Saffron's weak point. There is no CoolMax cover, no profiled surface and no spring layer, just a deep quilted cover over solid memory foam, which is the classic recipe for retaining heat. Average sleepers in a normal bedroom will be comfortable. If you run warm, the Comfort CoolMax Intelligent at £192 is the same depth with a cooling cover, and it is the better buy for you.
Edge support and motion isolation
Edge support is reasonable for an all-foam mattress at this depth – better than the Core models, short of any sprung build. Motion isolation is very good; memory foam at 23cm absorbs a partner's movement almost entirely, which makes this a solid budget option for couples. See our couples guide for the alternatives.
Durability, trial and warranty
Depth is the best predictor of foam mattress longevity, and at 23cm the Saffron should outlast every Core model by some margin. Five-year warranty, no home trial. Expect 6–7 years of nightly use at average body weight. Rotate head-to-toe monthly for the first year, then quarterly.
Our verdict
The Saffron Comfort Deep is the sensible default in The Foam People range and the one we would point most people towards. It has no badge because it wins no category outright, but it is the only mattress in the range under £200 with the depth to serve as a proper everyday bed for an average adult. Its one real weakness is heat – if that describes you, pay £18 more for the CoolMax version.
