Who the Emma Original Lite suits
The Original Lite is Emma's entry model, and it is best understood as a guest-room and second-bedroom mattress rather than a cut-price version of the Emma Original. At £246 for a double it earns a value score of 9.4, the highest we have awarded, because you get Emma's 200-night trial and 10-year warranty at roughly half the price of the flagship.
It suits lighter sleepers, spare rooms, first flats and student houses. It is the wrong mattress if it is the bed you sleep in 365 nights a year and you weigh much over 14 stone, in which case the Original or the sprung Original Pro will hold up far better. Construction and materials
The Lite is a 20cm two-layer all-foam build: a comfort foam top layer over a supportive base foam, wrapped in a breathable cover. That is 5cm shallower than the Original and one layer simpler, and the missing layer is the one that matters most, Emma's Airgocell foam, which does the fast-recovering, heat-dispersing work in the pricier models.
What you keep is a properly graduated two-density build rather than a single foam slab with a thin topper, which is what most sub-£250 mattresses actually are. That difference is why it still scores 8.0 for comfort.
Comfort and support
We score the Lite 8.0 for comfort and 7.6 for support. The medium feel is accurate and forgiving: on your back the base foam keeps the hips from dipping for anyone of light-to-average build, and on your side there is enough give at the shoulder to keep the spine roughly level.
The limit is compression depth. Put a heavier sleeper on 20cm of foam and you run out of material, the hips sink, and the neutral alignment disappears. Temperature
All-foam mattresses insulate, and the Lite has neither the open-pored Airgocell layer nor the graphite infusion used further up the range. Edge support and motion isolation
Edge support is modest. Sitting on the side to put shoes on compresses the perimeter noticeably, and on a double that costs you a few usable centimetres each side. Motion isolation is the compensation: foam this soft absorbs movement well, so a guest sharing the bed will not feel their partner turn over.
Durability, trial and warranty
Emma applies the same 200-night home trial and 10-year sagging warranty here as on the £999 Original Elite, which is unusually generous at this price and materially de-risks the purchase. Realistically, expect 5–6 years of nightly use at average body weight, or a great deal longer in a room used occasionally. Rotate it head-to-toe monthly for the first year to even out wear.
Our verdict
The Original Lite is the best-value mattress we list, provided you buy it for the job it is built for. As a guest bed, a spare room or a tight-budget first mattress it is close to unbeatable: brand-name foam quality, a 200-night safety net and a 10-year warranty for £246. As a primary bed for an average or heavier adult, spend the extra £223 on the Original and get the third foam layer and the 25cm depth that make it last.
