What is a divan base?#
A divan base is a solid or slatted box-style platform, typically upholstered in fabric, that supports the mattress. Most UK divan bases come with optional drawer storage — either two or four drawers — built into the base. They usually sit on small castors and do not have a visible frame or headboard (though a headboard can be attached separately).
What is a bed frame?#
A bed frame is a structural frame — wooden or metal — with legs and a slatted base. The slats span the frame to support the mattress from below. Bed frames range from simple, minimalist wooden platforms to ornate upholstered designs. Most do not include storage, though ottoman bed frames (which lift up to reveal storage below) are an increasingly popular hybrid option.
Comparing the two#
Support for the mattress#
Both can provide excellent support, but the quality of the slats matters for bed frames. Slats should be no more than 6–8 cm apart; wider gaps allow the mattress to sag between them and will shorten its life. Solid top divan bases offer the most even support and are generally the best option for memory foam and all-foam mattresses, which benefit from a completely flat surface.
Storage#
Divan bases win clearly if storage is a priority. The drawer configuration is practical and keeps bedroom floors clear. Ottoman bed frames are an alternative but typically cost more.
Aesthetics#
Bed frames generally offer more design variety and can be a statement piece in a bedroom. Divan bases are more utilitarian and practical but less visually interesting.
Cost#
Divan bases are typically cheaper than a comparable quality bed frame, though adding storage drawers increases the price. An entry-level double divan base costs £100–£200; quality options run £300–£600.
Warranty implications#
Always check your mattress manufacturer's base requirements. Some mattresses require a specific slat spacing or a solid base to maintain warranty validity. Memory foam mattress brands often specify slatted bases with slats no more than 5 cm apart, or a solid platform.
Which should you choose?#
- Choose a divan base if: you need storage, you have a memory foam mattress, or you want the most straightforward and cost-effective solution.
- Choose a bed frame if: aesthetics matter, you have a good pocket-sprung or hybrid mattress, or you want a more design-led bedroom.
- Consider an ottoman frame if: you want the storage of a divan with the look of a bed frame and are willing to pay a premium.
