About Emma Sleep#

Emma Sleep is a German mattress brand founded in Frankfurt in 2013 that has become one of the best-known mattress names in the UK. The brand sells primarily online, with a direct-to-consumer model that cuts out the high-street retailer mark-up. Emma's flagship product — the Emma Original — is a three-layer all-foam mattress that has won numerous awards and become one of the highest-volume sellers in the UK market.

Emma backs its mattresses with a 200-night free trial and a 10-year guarantee, placing it among the most generous policies in the UK market.

Emma Original: construction and materials#

The Emma Original is a three-layer all-foam mattress, approximately 25 cm deep:

  • Top layer — Airgocell foam (7 cm): Emma's proprietary open-cell foam. More breathable than standard memory foam, with a medium response time. This is the primary comfort layer.
  • Middle layer — visco-elastic memory foam (3 cm): A thin layer of classic memory foam sits beneath the Airgocell, adding pressure-relief properties and the characteristic contouring feel.
  • Base layer — cold foam (15 cm): A high-density supportive foam base that provides structural support and durability. Cold foam is more resilient than memory foam and forms the structural backbone of the mattress.

The cover is a machine-washable knitted fabric with a soft, breathable feel. It is removable via a zip for cleaning.

How firm is the Emma Original?#

Emma rates the Original as medium firmness (H3 in their European classification). In real-world use, most average-weight UK sleepers (10–14 stone / 65–90 kg) experience it as medium-soft to medium — it has a noticeable sink-in quality from the top Airgocell layer. Heavier sleepers (over 16 stone / 100 kg) will find it compresses more and feels noticeably softer.

It is best suited to side sleepers and combination sleepers of average weight who want good pressure relief with moderate support.

Temperature performance#

The Airgocell foam top layer performs better than traditional memory foam for temperature regulation, but the Emma Original is still an all-foam mattress and will sleep warmer than a hybrid. Hot sleepers may find the Original uncomfortable during warmer months. Emma also produces the Emma Hybrid (discussed in a separate review) which addresses this limitation.

Who the Emma Original suits#

  • Best for: Side sleepers (average weight), combination sleepers, couples seeking good motion isolation, first-time online mattress buyers wanting a risk-free trial
  • Less suitable for: Hot sleepers, heavier sleepers (over 16 stone), those who prefer a bouncy or spring-like feel, stomach sleepers who need firm support

Value for money#

Emma regularly runs promotions that bring the Original to around £350–£450 for a double — competitive for an all-foam mattress of this quality. Combined with the 200-night trial and 10-year guarantee, it represents solid value. However, at full RRP (closer to £600 for a double), some hybrid alternatives offer better performance for the money.

Our verdict#

The Emma Original earns its popularity. It's a well-made, comfortable all-foam mattress with a generous trial and good guarantee. For side and combination sleepers of average weight who want pressure relief and decent motion isolation, it's one of the UK's best options at its price point. Hot sleepers and heavier individuals should consider the Emma Hybrid instead.
